Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)

Goldenseal has been used for centuries in traditional cultures, such as the Cherokee Native American, to treat infections of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. It restores mucus membranes and the skin by means of its powerful pharmacology including potent natural alkaloids and berberine. Goldenseal is my go-to antimicrobial herb to address skin infections and to tonify skin recovering from procedures or injuries.  Its vibrant golden yellow color is surprisingly bright and has been used as a natural coloring pigment. It is one of our more bitter herbs, not quite as strong as gentian, however making it extremely astringent and perfect for healing the skin from a variety of conditions. Sustainable cultivating is essential as goldenseal has been an endangered plant. Alternatives include Oregon Grape Root and Chinese Coptis.

It is another berberine-rich botanical medicine, like goldenseal, and is an excellent antimicrobial, astringent, antioxidant-rich skin medicine. It is indicated for skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, and skin inflammation in general.

  • Anti-microbial, astringent, vulnerary, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant.

  • Drying, cooling, bitter, astringent, antioxidant-rich.

Holistic Dermatology

Holistic dermatology is built on the belief that skin health is deeply connected to the body’s overall well-being. This practice takes a whole-body approach—considering internal imbalances, emotional health, lifestyle, and environmental factors as part of the skin’s story. It values gentle intervention, long-term healing, and the body’s innate ability to restore balance.

Supportive care before and after treatment is an essential part of this philosophy. Botanically based remedies, like those from Luca Botanica, are used to complement in-office procedures—chosen for their purity, simplicity, and alignment with the skin’s natural function.

This approach avoids harsh chemicals and unnecessary disruption. Instead, it focuses on restoring harmony, encouraging resilience, and offering care that’s as respectful as it is effective for all ages and to support true, lasting skin health.
